Sweeny Police Sergeant Found Dead

On Sunday night, June 26, 2005, Sweeny Police Department Sergeant Joseph (J.D.) Gregory passed away at his residence in Brazoria, Texas. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2005, from 5-8pm at Baker's Funeral Home in Brazoria (118 W. Texas), Texas.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 1, 2005, at 2pm at the First Assembly of God Church in Brazoria (601 S. Market Street), Texas.  Burial will follow at Jones Creek Cemetery.

Sgt. Gregory began his career in law enforcement at the Sweeny Police Department in November of 1993 as a Patrol Officer.  He was certified as the department's K9 Officer and earned his Advanced Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer's Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).  Sgt. Gregory began working for ConocoPhillips in September of 2000, and as a result, dropped from a full-time Patrol Officer to a Reserve Officer.  On December 4, 2003, Officer Gregory was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sgt. Gregory left work late Sunday afternoon and was scheduled to return the next morning.  However, when he did not show up, a co-worked became concerned.  It was unlike Sgt. Gregory to miss work.  The co-worked call the Sweeny Police Department and express those concerns. The police department was unable to contact Sgt. Gregory either.  Since Sgt. Gregory lived in the City of Brazoria, the Brazoria Police Department (BPD) was requested to attempt to make contact with him at his house. When BPD arrived, Sgt. Gregory's vehicle was at his house, all the doors and windows were locked, but the television could be heard from outside.  After numerous calls were not responded to from inside, forced entry was made into the house.  BPD found Sgt. Gregory had passed away earlier in the morning.

Sgt. Gregory's death was ruled natural by the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office as a result of an enlarged heart.
