Crime Prevention Programs
Bicycle Registration ProgramThe Sweeny Police Department, in an effort to aid in the identification and recovery of stolen/lost bicycles, registers bicycles FREE OF CHARGE at the police station.
To have your bicycle registered, bring the bicycle with you to the police station. We will fill out a brief Registration Card to document all of the particular information about you and your bicycle. Then, we will imprint a four-digit registration number into the frame of the bicycle.
The bicycle registration process only takes a few minutes, and it is completely FREE OF CHARGE.
If your bicycle is ever lost or stolen, make a police report and tell us the bicycle has been registered.
The Bicycle Registration Program does not guarantee your bicycle will never be stolen. It does, however, assist the police department in cases where we find an abandoned or stolen bicycle. The police department will have a much greater chance of returning the bicycle to you because of the registration.
Child IDThe Sweeny Police Department participates in the National Child Identification Program sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
According to the program, over 800,000 children are missing every year---that's 1 every 40 seconds:
The program provides a Child ID Kit which includes:
All items are completed and stored at home. If ever needed, you can provide this information to authorities to help reunite a missing child with your family.
Child ID Kits are available in the Sweeny Police Department lobby FREE of cost.
Crime StoppersThe Sweeny Police Department does not operate a crime stoppers organization, but does participate under the umbrella of Brazoria County Crime Stoppers.
In every community there are people who have information that could help police arrest criminals, but the information never reaches officials. Two of the factors that impede this flow are fear and apathy. Crime Stoppers programs overcome these obstacles and provide a new channel for knowledge to flow from the public to the police.
Here is how the program works. Crime Stoppers provide a telephone
number where citizens can anonymously report information that may help
police solve crimes (listed above). Callers are assigned a code number
which they refer to when they call back with more information or to
check on the status of the information they provided. At no time are
callers required to provide their name, address or telephone number.
If the information provided leads to an arrest, the caller is eligible
to receive a reward, which can be up to $1,000.
Crime Stopper AlertThe Sweeny Police Department recently partnered with Crime Stopper Alert, an Internet Notification System used to distribute police alerts of:
Housewatch & Security CheckThe Sweeny Police Department will conduct regular watches, drive-bys, and security checks for home owners and business owners of Sweeny who are planning vacations or must be away from home/work for an extended period of time (or just a few days).
To request a Housewatch, call the police department or fill out the form online and submit it to us via e-mail or fax. It only takes a few minute to complete. The service is free - all you need to do is fill out a request form.
Project ChildSafeProject ChildSafe is a firearms safety education program of the State of Texas, providing 750,000 FREE gun lock safety kits to state residents. The Sweeny Police Department was allotted 200 such gun locks. Firearm owners who request a free safety kit will receive it with "no questions asked." While recent statistics show that the number of accidental injuries and deaths resulting from firearms in decreasing, we feel that if even one accident or death can be prevented through Project ChildSafe, the program will have been worth the effort. We encourage everyone who owns a firearm to store it with a cable lock installed in a location inaccessible to children or other unauthorized users. Ammunition should be stored in a separate location. The firearms safety pamphlet that is included with the gun lock in each project ChildSafe firearms safety kits is just as important as the lock itself. It explains the importance of firearm safety in your home. We encourage everyone to read it and follow its advice. For more information, click here.
