PRESS RELEASE --- "Peeping Tom" Story

04/12/2013

SWEENY --- On Sunday, April 7, 2013, at approximately 10:20 p.m., the Sweeny Police Department received a prowler call in the 500 block of Avenue A.  The caller allegedly witnessed a man walking on the neighbor's property and the police were called.  Upon arrival, the officer checked the property but was unable to locate anyone either on the property or in the immediate area.  Upon checking with the homeowner, it was determined that no signs of forced entry were detected or observed.  The officer stayed in the area checking the neighborhood but was unable to locate anyone.

At present, this remains an isolated incident.

Although the police department receives numerous calls of prowlers each week throughout the city, no other calls have been received by the police regarding prowlers in this area.

The police department hopes residents use common sense and sound judgment when hearing unsubstantiated and sensational stories on social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instragram) without first verifying the validity of such with the police department or local officials.  While police officials value citizen input, community outreach, and social awareness, they urge residents to also be responsible and conscientious about the content of their messages and the unnecessary fear and panic it can cause in a community.

Since the call was received on April 7, the area has been on close patrol; no other suspicious person calls have been received and no unusual activity has been observed by police or reported by local residents.

The police department urges residents to always be aware of their surroundings and to call the police if they observe unusual or suspicious activity.

If you have information regarding this incident or any other incident, please call the police department at 979-548-3111 or report tips anonymously at tips@sweenypolice.org.

Recovered Stolen Property; Unknown Owners

10/30/2012

In July, the Sweeny Police Department recovered numerous items of stolen property from area pawn shops (Angleton, Clute, Brazoria, Houston, and Galveston).  These items were stolen in Sweeny between June-July of this year.  Police arrested John Crawford, 27, of Lake Jackson, who admitted to taking the items from Sweeny.  Police have successfully returned many of the items to their rightful owners. Several items, however, still remain unclaimed.

The police department has not released photos of the recovered property (to protect against false ownership claims), but they have released the following list of items still unclaimed:

  • Lawn Mower

  • Air Compressor

  • Miter Saw

  • Tool Set

  • Trolling Motor

  • Trolling Motor

If you had property stolen and think any of these items may belong to you, you’re asked to contact Sgt. Chris Beck or Lt. Chad Makara at 979-548-3111.  Proof of ownership is required.
